  • Tackling cold calls in a no cold calling zone

    Norfolk County Council follows up all reported incidents of cold calling.  This may be limited to finding out why a trader has ignored a designated no cold calling zone but may include more formal enquiries.

    There is no law preventing cold calling. However, by law, you have 14 days to cancel contracts signed at home or your place of work for works costing more than £42. The trader must give you a cancellation notice, allowing a 14-day cooling off period.  It’s a criminal offence if they don’t do this and Trading Standards may be able to take enforcement action.

    If you see doorstep cold callers operating in a No Cold Calling zone in Norfolk, please contact us through our partners the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on freephone 0808 223 1133 or online via their website.

    You can also report doorstep cold calling incidents to Norfolk Police on 101 or if you feel intimidated or are concerned for vulnerable neighbours by calling 999.

  • Scams and Cold Callers

    If you receive what you think is a fake text message, forward the text message, including the phone number or company name, to 7726. It won’t cost you anything and it means your phone provider can investigate the sender.
    Report all scams and cold callers via Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133 or via their website.
    Be aware that people calling at your door, with goods to sell there and then, must have a pedlar’s certificate, which is issued by the local police.
    Anyone selling you a service at your door, such as a builder, must give you paperwork with their name and contact details, with details of the 14 day cooling off period.

  • Upton’s No Cold Calling Zone

    The village of Upton is now a No Cold Calling Zone. Norfolk County Council Trading Standards have put up signs at all entrances to the village.

    If you are an Upton resident you should have received a welcome pack from Norfolk County Council which explains that the Zone is to discourage cold callers from calling uninvited at your door. Obviously the decision to accept cold callers is yours to make but, for many people, they are unwelcome and for a few they can be distressing.

    There have been a few reports recently of salesmen calling at homes in the village, uninvited. They have said that they didn’t know about the Zone but then are believed to have called at more houses.

    If this happens to you, please make a note of the company they claim to be working for, and phone Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133 or via their website . This information will then be sent out to parish clerks in the area and to those who have signed up to alerts about scams and cold calling from: https://www.norfolk.gov.uk/business/trading-standards/scams
